Why Every Child Needs Time Away from Screens

Why Every Child Needs Time Away from Screens

Remember when boredom was just part of being a kid? You'd lie on the floor, stare at the ceiling, and eventually - out of sheer desperation - come up with something to do. That boredom was a gift, even if it didn't feel like it at the time. And here's the problem: our kids don't get to experience it anymore.

Every moment of downtime is now filled with a screen. Waiting at a restaurant? Here's a phone. Long car ride? Here's a tablet. Five minutes of quiet? Let's find a video. We've become so uncomfortable with our kids being bored that we rush to fill every gap with digital stimulation. And we're stealing something important from them.

Boredom is where creativity is born. When there's nothing to do, the brain starts looking for something. It makes connections, tries new ideas, invents games out of thin air. That's not wasted time - that's brain development in action. But if we never let our kids sit with boredom, they never develop that muscle.

I know it's hard. When your kid says 'I'm bored,' it's annoying. It's easier to hand them a screen. But try something different next time. Say, 'Okay, figure something out.' Don't offer suggestions. Don't rescue them. Let them sit with the discomfort of 'nothing to do' and see what happens.

You might be amazed at what they come up with. And if they don't? That's okay too. Sometimes the best thing a child can learn is that it's okay to be still. Every kid needs time away from screens - not because screens are bad, but because real life is better.
