The memory palace is one of the oldest and most powerful memory techniques in human history. Ancient Greek and Roman orators used it to remember hours of speeches. And children can learn it too, often faster than adults.
How It Works
The memory palace uses the right brain powerful spatial memory to store information. Your child imagines a familiar place, their home, a park, a school. Then they place the things they want to remember in specific locations within that space.
When they need to recall the information, they mentally walk through their palace and see each item in its place. The spatial and visual nature of the technique makes it remarkably effective for young children, whose right brains are already strong.
Getting Started
Begin with a simple space your child knows well. Their bedroom works perfectly. Ask them to picture the room in detail. Where is the bed? The window? The door?
Now place three items they want to remember in three locations. If they need to remember to brush their teeth, put a giant toothbrush on the bed. If they need to remember their shoes, put enormous shoes on the window sill. The sillier and more vivid the images, the better they stick.
Practical Applications
Use the memory palace for spelling words. Place each word in a room and create a vivid image that connects to its meaning. Use it for math facts. Visualize equations as scenes in different rooms. Use it for story sequences. Place each plot point in a different location.
