Can Educational Apps Really Make Children Smarter

Can Educational Apps Really Make Children Smarter

I'll admit it - I've downloaded my fair share of 'educational' apps for my kids. The ones promising to teach them reading, math, and problem-solving while they tap on a screen. And you know what? Some of them are actually good. But here's the question that keeps me up at night: are they really making our kids smarter, or do they just feel like they are?

Let's look at what's actually happening. When a child uses an educational app, they're responding to prompts, tapping on the right answer, and being rewarded with stars or sounds. That's not the same as learning. It's more like training. They're getting good at the app - not necessarily at the skill the app claims to teach.

Real learning is messy. It involves getting things wrong, trying different approaches, and sitting with confusion for a while. Most educational apps don't allow for that. They're designed to keep kids engaged, not to let them struggle productively. And struggle - real, honest struggle - is where deep learning happens.

Does that mean educational apps are worthless? Not at all. They can be great for practice and reinforcement. But they shouldn't replace real-world learning. Building with blocks, talking to people, making a mess in the kitchen - those experiences beat any app, hands down.

So here's my rule: use apps as a supplement, not a substitute. Your child's best teacher is still a curious adult who asks them questions and listens to their answers. No app will ever replace that. Sorry, developers.
