Why Resilience Matters More Than Talent

Why Resilience Matters More Than Talent

We've all said it at some point: 'They're so talented!' It rolls off the tongue so easily. We love celebrating our kids' natural abilities. But here's something I've been thinking about lately: talent is overrated. It's resilience that actually matters. And we're not paying nearly enough attention to it.

Think about it. Talent gets you started, but it's resilience that keeps you going. The naturally gifted kid who never learned to handle failure will struggle much more than the average kid who knows how to get back up. I've seen it happen over and over. The kids who succeed aren't always the smartest or the most talented - they're the ones who didn't quit when things got hard.

Resilience isn't something you're born with. It's built. Every time your child falls down and gets back up, every time they try something and fail and try again, they're building that muscle. And here's the tricky part: we have to let them fail. We can't rush in and fix everything the moment they struggle.

I know how hard that is. Your instinct is to protect them from disappointment. But every disappointment they survive is a brick in their resilience foundation. If we remove every obstacle, we're not helping - we're handicapping them for a world that will not remove obstacles.

So praise effort, not talent. Say 'I'm proud of how hard you tried' instead of 'You're so smart.' Let them struggle sometimes. And when they fall, be there to help them up - not to catch them before they fall. That's the difference between raising a talented child and raising a resilient one.
