How to Help Children Manage Big Emotions

How to Help Children Manage Big Emotions

Your child is melting down because you cut their sandwich into triangles instead of squares. You're standing there thinking, 'It's just a sandwich!' But for them, it's not about the sandwich. It's about a world that feels out of control, and this is the one thing they thought they could count on. Big emotions don't need big reasons. They just need a place to go.

Here's something I wish someone had told me sooner: kids aren't giving you a hard time. They're having a hard time. When your child is screaming because their toy broke or crying because they don't want to put on shoes, they're not trying to manipulate you. They're overwhelmed by feelings they don't know how to handle yet. Their brains literally aren't wired for emotional regulation. That comes later.

So what do you do in those moments? First, take a breath. You can't help them calm down if you're not calm yourself. Then get down to their level and name the feeling. 'You're really upset right now because the tower fell down.' That's it. You don't need to fix it. You don't need to reason with them. Just acknowledging their feeling is often enough to start bringing them back.

It won't work every time. Some meltdowns just need to run their course. And that's okay. Your job isn't to stop the feeling - it's to be there while they feel it. To show them that big emotions are survivable.

You're not going to handle every meltdown perfectly. None of us do. But every time you stay calm and present, you're teaching your child something important: feelings are okay. And that's a lesson they'll carry with them for life.
