Why Intelligent Children Are Struggling More Than Ever Before

Why Intelligent Children Are Struggling More Than Ever Before

If you have a bright child, you might assume they are set for life. But here is something that might surprise you. Intelligent children today are struggling more than ever before. And the reason is not what you might think.

The problem is not that they are not smart enough. The problem is that they have spent their whole lives being praised for being smart. And that praise has become a trap.

Children who are labeled smart early on often develop a hidden fear. They start to believe that their intelligence is a fixed trait rather than something they can grow. Psychologist Carol Dweck calls this a fixed mindset. When these children encounter something difficult, they do not think I need to try harder. They think if I fail at this I am not actually smart. So they avoid challenges. They give up quickly. They crumble when things do not come easily.

There is another factor too. Many bright children are never taught how to learn. Because school comes easily to them, they never develop study skills, persistence, or the ability to work through frustration. They coast on talent. And then one day, usually around middle school, the work gets hard enough that talent alone is not enough. That is when the struggle really begins.

The good news is that you can prevent this. Praise effort, not intelligence. Celebrate struggle and persistence. Let your child take on challenges that are hard for them. And when they fail, help them see it as a stepping stone, not a verdict on their worth. Intelligence is a gift. But resilience is what makes that gift matter.
