What Is the Shichida Method? Whole Brain Training Explained

Understanding Shichida

The Shichida Method comes up in almost every conversation about right brain education. It was developed by Professor Makoto Shichida in Japan and has gained worldwide popularity. But what exactly is it?

The Core Philosophy

Shichida believed that traditional education overemphasizes the left brain while neglecting the right. His method aims to develop both hemispheres equally, creating a "whole brain" approach.

The method focuses on five key areas: imagination, visualization, intuition, feeling, and image memory. These are all right brain functions that most educational systems ignore.

What a Shichida Session Looks Like

A typical Shichida class includes flashcard sessions, visualization exercises, sensory activities, creative play, and parent-child bonding exercises. The sessions are structured but flexible, adapting to each child's response.

One unique aspect is the "image training" where children are guided through mental images. This develops their ability to create and manipulate pictures in their mind.

Age Range and Structure

Shichida programs typically accept children from birth to age six. Classes are usually 60-90 minutes and held weekly. Parent participation is required, especially for younger children.

The curriculum progresses through stages, each building on the previous one. This ensures comprehensive development across all areas.

Why It Works

Shichida works because it aligns with how young children naturally learn. Before age six, children are primarily right-brained. They learn through images, emotions, and intuition rather than logic and analysis.

By working with this natural tendency instead of against it, Shichida achieves results with less stress and more enjoyment.

Our Shichida Journey

We tried Shichida with our daughter for a year. The visualization exercises were particularly impressive. Within months, she could create detailed mental images and describe them vividly.

The flashcard sessions also improved her attention span and visual memory. These skills transferred to other areas of her development.

Is Shichida Right for Your Family?

Shichida requires significant parent commitment. You need to attend classes and practice at home. If you're willing to invest the time, the results can be remarkable.

But if you're looking for a hands-off approach, Shichida might not be the best fit. It's a partnership between parent, child, and teacher.
