Inside a Right Brain Class
When I first visited a right brain class, I didn't know what to expect. It looked different from anything I'd imagined. Here's what actually happens.
The Opening
Classes typically start with a greeting ritual. This might include songs, movements, or group activities. The purpose is to transition children into learning mode and create a positive atmosphere.
This opening routine helps children feel comfortable and ready to engage.
Flashcard Session
The flashcard segment is usually one of the first activities. Cards are shown rapidly, one after another, while children watch. The teacher might describe each card briefly or show them in silence.
This session typically lasts 5-10 minutes and includes 50-100 cards.
Visualization Exercise
Next comes visualization. The teacher guides children through a mental image exercise. This might involve imagining a scene, creating mental pictures, or visualizing specific objects.
Children often close their eyes or look at a focal point during this exercise.
Creative Activity
Most classes include a creative component. This might be art, music, storytelling, or imaginative play. The specific activity varies by program and age group.
This segment allows children to apply their right brain skills in a creative context.
Parent-Child Activity
Many programs include activities that parents and children do together. This might be a bonding exercise, a cooperative game, or a shared creative project.
These activities strengthen the parent-child relationship while reinforcing learning.
Closing Routine
Classes end with a closing ritual. This might include songs, celebrations of what was learned, or preview of next week's activities. The closure helps children transition out of learning mode.
A positive ending leaves children looking forward to the next class.
The Atmosphere
Quality right brain classes have a warm, supportive atmosphere. Teachers are encouraging, not demanding. Children are engaged, not stressed. The environment feels safe and nurturing.
This atmosphere is essential for optimal learning.
What You Won't See
You won't see strict discipline, forced compliance, or competitive comparison. Right brain education is about nurturing, not pushing. If a class feels stressful, it's not the right fit.
The best classes feel like play, not work.
