Are We Raising Children Who Cant Handle Failure

Have you watched a child completely fall apart over a wrong answer on a worksheet? Or refuse to try a new game because they might lose? You are not alone. Teachers and parents across the country are noticing something troubling: more children than ever seem unable to handle even small failures.

The irony is painful. We have tried so hard to protect our children from disappointment that we may have accidentally robbed them of the one thing they actually need: practice failing.

Failure is not the opposite of success. It is part of success. Every scientist, athlete, artist, and entrepreneur knows this. But if children never experience failure in childhood, when are they supposed to learn how to handle it? The first real failure at age twenty-five hits so much harder than a lost board game at age seven.

Here is what has changed. We remove obstacles before children encounter them. We argue with teachers about grades. We step in to solve every social conflict. We celebrate participation and hand out trophies just for showing up. All with good intentions. But the unintended consequence is a generation that has not developed the emotional muscles to cope with disappointment.

So what can you do? Let your child fail in small ways. Let them forget their homework. Let them lose a game. Let them experience the natural consequences of their choices. Then be there to help them process it. Not to fix it, but to talk through what happened and what they might try differently next time. That is how resilience is built. One small failure at a time.
