DIY Indoor Games

The Joy of Making Games

There is something special about games you make yourself. They are more personal, more creative, and often more fun than store-bought versions. Plus, the process of making the game is itself a learning experience.

Paper and Cardboard Games

Board Game Creator

Give kids cardboard, markers, and stickers. They create their own board games. My daughter designed a game about animals that became our family favorite.

Card Game Design

Make your own card game. Create cards with different values, powers, or effects. Write rules together. The design teaches systematic thinking.

Origami Games

Learn to fold fortune tellers, paper footballs, and jumping frogs. My kids play paper football tournaments for hours.

Paper Airplane Contest

Design and build paper airplanes. Test distance, accuracy, and hang time. The iteration process teaches engineering thinking.

Recycled Material Games

Bottle Bowling

Fill plastic bottles with a little water or sand for weight. Use a soft ball to knock them down. We made a full bowling alley in our hallway.

Cardboard Box City

Collect cardboard boxes of different sizes. Build a city with roads, buildings, and cars. My kids spent an entire weekend creating their cardboard metropolis.

Tin Can Telephone

Connect two tin cans with string for a working telephone. This teaches sound transmission. My kids were amazed that sound could travel through string.

Egg Carton Games

Use egg cartons for sorting games, counting activities, or as game boards. The compartments are perfect for organizing game pieces.

Fabric and Yarn Games

Bean Bag Toss

Make bean bags from fabric and rice. Create targets from cardboard. The bean bag toss develops hand-eye coordination.

Pom-Pom Push

Poke pom-poms through holes in a cardboard box. Simple but satisfying for young kids. Develops fine motor skills.

Yarn Maze

Create a maze with yarn strung across a hallway. Navigate through without touching the yarn. This develops spatial awareness.

The Making Process

Involve kids in the design process. Ask what kind of game they want to make. Let them draw plans before building. The planning and execution teaches more than any toy.

Final Thoughts

DIY games teach creativity, engineering thinking, and the satisfaction of making something from nothing. Start with one project this weekend. You might be surprised at what your kids create.
