Schools are going digital, homework is online, and many kids have their own smartphones by middle school. Technology is woven into modern childhood whether we like it or not. But as smartphones become more common, teachers and parents are noticing something troubling, kids seem to be having a harder time paying attention and thinking deeply.
Is it all because of smartphones? Probably not. But the research suggests that smartphone use plays a bigger role in learning and brain development than many of us realized.
How Smartphone Use Affects Attention in the Classroom
Teachers have been saying it for years, kids can't focus like they used to. And while there are many factors at play, excessive smartphone use is a big one. The problem isn't just that phones are distracting during class. It's that the way kids use phones outside of school is changing how their brains handle attention.
Smartphones train the brain for rapid switching. A typical kid might watch a video for 30 seconds, check a notification, switch to a game, get bored, switch back to the video, all in just a few minutes. This constant task-switching becomes the brain's default mode. Then when they're in class and need to focus on one thing for 45 minutes, their brain is out of practice.
Studies have shown that even having a phone visible on a desk, not even being used, can reduce cognitive performance. Reading Comprehension in the Digital Age

This effect is especially pronounced for younger readers and for longer, more complex texts.
Why does this happen? Part of it is the way our brains process information on screens. We tend to scan more and read less deeply on screens, a behavior sometimes called F-pattern reading. For kids who are still learning to read, this can be particularly problematic. They need to develop strong decoding skills and the ability to sustain attention through long texts. If they're primarily reading on screens, they're getting less practice with the kind of deep reading that builds these skills.
There's also the issue of multitasking. When kids read on devices that also have games, social media, and messages, the temptation to switch tasks is constant. Even brief interruptions during reading can significantly reduce comprehension and retention.
Creativity and Imagination
This is harder to measure than attention or reading comprehension, but it might be just as important. Creativity requires boredom, unstructured time, and the ability to entertain yourself with your own thoughts. Smartphones eliminate boredom almost entirely.
When a child is waiting in a line, sitting in a car, or lying in bed before sleep, they used to daydream or make up stories in their head. Now, they pull out a phone and fill every empty moment with content. That constant external stimulation can crowd out the internal creative processes that are essential for developing imagination.
Research on creativity and screen time is still emerging, but early findings suggest that kids who spend more time on screens tend to score lower on measures of creative thinking. They may produce fewer original ideas and have less capacity for sustained imaginative play.
The Homework Distraction Problem
If your child has a phone, you've probably experienced the homework battle. What should take 30 minutes stretches into two hours because of constant phone checking. And it's not just about the time lost to distraction. Each interruption means the brain has to re-engage with the task, which takes energy and reduces the quality of the work.

The solution isn't necessarily taking the phone away during homework. It's teaching kids to manage their own attention and focus. This is a skill that can be developed with practice, but it requires guidance and consistent boundaries.
Finding a Balanced Approach for School-Age Kids
Complete restriction isn't realistic for school-age kids who need technology for education and social connection. But unlimited access isn't healthy either. Here's a balanced approach that many families have found works well:
Separate learning from leisure. Help your child understand that there's a difference between using a phone for homework and using it for entertainment. Both have a place, but they shouldn't blur together constantly.
Create focus rituals. Before homework, establish a routine that includes putting the phone in another room, setting a timer, and committing to focused work for a set period.
Encourage deep reading. Make sure your child spends time reading actual books, not just articles or social media posts. Deep reading builds attention, comprehension, and vocabulary in ways that fragmented digital reading doesn't.
Protect unstructured time. Don't fill every moment of your child's day with activities and screens. Let them be bored sometimes. Boredom is the seed of creativity.
Talk about what they're learning. Ask your child to tell you about what they read or watched. Processing and explaining information helps solidify learning and builds critical thinking skills.
What Schools Can Do
This isn't just a home issue. Schools play a role too. Some of the most effective approaches include designated phone-free times during the school day, teaching digital literacy from an early age, and integrating technology in ways that enhance rather than replace traditional learning methods.
